Skipping Bail - What You Need to Know

There are many things you need to consider if you are thinking about bailing someone you care about out of jail. One of the most important things you need to understand is the details of skipping bail, and what the consequences are if someone you bail out decides to leave town to avoid trial. As experienced bail bondsmen in the Denver area, the bail agents at All Day All Night Bail Bonds have helped hundreds of people get out of jail. In today’s blog post, we’ll take a look at skipping bail, and what it means for you as a co-signer of a bail bond.

What is Skipping Bail?

We’ve all heard the term, whether from the movies or television, but what exactly does it mean to skip bail? When a person is bailed out of jail, they are expected to return to court to face justice. This is the purpose of bail – to act as an incentive to return. If a person fails to return to court after their release for any of their hearings, it is referred to as skipping, or jumping bail.

What are the Consequences of Skipping Bail?

The consequences of skipping bail fall across the board for everyone: The person who leaves town will have another warrant out for their arrest, and will face additional criminal charges when caught (and, it is likely that no bail will be set once they are re-arrested). The person who co-signed the bail bond, or provided the collateral or bail money will also be impacted. Depending on the way they posted bail, they will either forfeit the money, lose their collateral, or be held responsible for the full bail amount as per the bail bond contract.  Bail agents are also held responsible, which is why they often hire bounty hunters to find and return the defendant so they don’t have to pay the full bail amount.
