About the City

The City of Fort Morgan is the county seat of Morgan County. In 1865, Camp Cardwell was established to protect emigrants and supplies as they reached the mining districts along the Overland Trail. The Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians were performing raids along the South Platter River out of retaliation for their diminished hunting grounds. One year after it was founded, the fort was renamed to Fort Morgan – after a man named Colonel Christopher A. Morgan, who had died the previous year. 19 different companies from 11 cavalry and infantry regiments used the fort until it was closed in 1868. It was on the ruins of this fort that the town of Fort Morgan was established in 1884 by a man named Abner S. Baker. Baker began constructing a canal that would irrigate about 25,000 acres of land. it was completed in 1884, and through less-than legal methods (bribery, to be exact), Baker was able to get a train station into the town. The town grew quickly after this, personifying the pioneer spirit of the west and of Colorado. In 1905, the town received a notable visitor – Theodore Roosevelt stopped and gave a short speech to over 1000 people. In modern times, Fort Morgan is home to over 11,000 people. There are many things to do in this fine city, including taking the Pioneer Trail Scenic and History Byway to the setting of James Michener’s Centennial – a novel about Colorado. Jackson Lake State Park provides excellent fishing, and the Rainbow Arch Bridge is beautiful example of fine architecture, if you are interested.
