About the City
The City of Fort Morgan is the county seat of Morgan County. In 1865, Camp Cardwell began to protect emigrants and supplies as they reached the mining districts along the Overland Trail. The Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians were performing raids along the South Platter River out of retaliation for their diminished hunting grounds. One year after its completion, the name became Fort Morgan – after a man named Colonel Christopher A. Morgan, who had died the previous year.
19 different companies from 11 cavalry and infantry regiments lived in the fort until it closed in 1868. It was on the ruins of this fort that the town of Fort Morgan was built in 1884 by a man named Abner S. Baker. Baker began constructing a canal that would irrigate about 25,000 acres of land. The project was complete by 1884, and through less-than legal methods (bribery, to be exact), Baker was able to get a train station into the town.
