Greeley’s history dates back to 1869 when it was first founded as Union Colony. Union Colony was a Utopian experiment organized by Nathan Mecker and sponsored by Horace Greeley. Horace Greeley was editor of the New York Tribune and he later became the city’s namesake. He also popularized the phrase “Go West, young man” when he sent Mecker to Colorado to look for land to utilize agriculturally. Union Valley was formed in order to promote agricultural settlements along the South Platte River Valley. It was established as a religiously oriented Utopian Community of “high moral standards.” Union Colony was initially successful, however some of the inhabitant did not agree with its religious nature, and so they spread out to nearby areas. Union Valley was known for its advanced irrigation usage and agricultural production.
