Tips on How to Choose the Best Criminal Defense LawyerAs a bail bondsman in Colorado, I have helped many people get out of jail using Greeley bail bonds. This is a great first step – after all – being in jail isn’t comfortable, physically or mentally, so being released on bail is a very good thing. But, it isn’t the only step. In fact, it’s only the beginning of your journey through the criminal justice system. Now, you need to decide how to move forward. Are you going to hire a criminal defense attorney? How will you go about choosing this defense lawyer? In my years in the jail and court system, I’ve worked with many layers and their clients. I’ve learned a few good ways to choose the best defense lawyer for your case.

1. Look for a 100% Criminal Defense Attorney

There are many types of law; family law (divorce), bankruptcy law, commercial law,, real estate law, tax law, etc. Don’t choose a lawyer who practices in more than one area: Criminal defense. Criminal law is extremely complex. You need someone who focuses on criminal defense and will be able to answer all the questions you have.

2. Ask them Questions

You found a good bail bond agent by asking questions, and seeing the responses you got. Do the same thing when you are looking for a criminal defense attorney. Give a potential lawyer a call, and ask them questions and see how they answer. Are they helpful? Are they caring? These are all things you should consider.

3. Check their Experience

During your phone call, ask them about their experience – especially defending someone against the specific crime your friend has been arrested for. They should be able to give you some examples of how they have defended someone the past. Additionally, ask them about their experience in the specific county or court where your friend has been charged. Each court varies wildly, and requires experience.

4. Utilize the Free Consultation

Many criminal defense attorneys offer a free consultation for your first visit. Obviously they won’t be able to give you actual legal advice until you sign a contract (for legal reasons), but you can still meet them face-to-face and see how well you work with them. Criminal cases take a while, so you need to know you work well with a lawyer before you sign an agreement.
