How Arapahoe County Bail Bonds Work

  • The jail requires an appointment to be made by the bail agent in order to post bond.
  • Release time must be within 6 hours once a bond is ordered (unless a GPS is ordered, or another bond condition holds up the process).
  • Arapahoe County also encompasses the Municipal Courts of Aurora, Bennett, Centennial, Columbine Valley, Englewood, Glendale, Greenwood Village, Littleton, and Sheridan.
  • This county sometimes utilizes Pretrial Services. If Pretrial Services monitoring is ordered by the Court, it may delay release of the defendant until the next day.
  • There are a couple of options to complete the bond process. Our bail agents can meet you at the jail, or we can complete the bail transaction electronically through faxes, credit cards, and email.

The county maintains one Detention Facility commonly referred to as the Arapahoe County Jail that is maintained and staffed by the Sheriff and is responsible for an average inmate population of over 1,400 inmates; a far cry from the original one-room jail that opened in Littleton in 1865. The sheriff is an elected every four years and limited to three terms. Currently the Sheriff is Mr. David C. Walcher.

Bail is the legal process that allows someone who has been arrested to be released from jail while awaiting trial or resolution of their case.

The court determines a bail amount (also called a bond amount), which serves as a financial guarantee that the person—known as the defendant—will attend all required court appearances. Once the bail is posted (either directly in cash, through property, or via a bail bonds service), the defendant is freed from custody with the clear obligation to show up for every scheduled court date.

If they appear as required, the bail is typically refunded at the end of the case (minus any applicable fees in some situations). This system helps balance the presumption of innocence with the need to ensure court attendance and public safety. Our team will walk you through every step with clarity and compassion.

The cost of a bail bond depends on a few different things, including details of the case, and the bond amount. At All Day All Night Bail Bonds, we offer:

History of the County

Arapahoe County is the oldest county in Colorado and actually pre-dates the formation of Colorado Territory. As such, the Sheriff’s Department could be considered the oldest Sheriff Department, rather than Denver. In 1855, Governor Woodson of Kansas Territory signed a proclamation creating Arapahoe County in what was then Kansas Territory. The original Arapahoe County covered roughly the entirety of present day Northeastern Colorado. In 1858 E.W. Wink arrived and was appointed Sheriff of Arapahoe County by the Governor Denver of Kansas Territory. The county seat at the time was located in Denver and that is how two Sheriff’s Departments claim to be the oldest in Colorado.

Responsibilities of the Jail

As with most Sheriff Departments, the Arapahoe County Sheriff is responsible for housing inmates, transporting prisoners, executing writs, court security, fugitive apprehension, and county patrols. Arapahoe County is the third most populous county in Colorado and encompasses a portion of the Denver Metropolitan area in addition to more rural areas. This department has been at the forefront of a number of nationally prominent incidents in the last decades; most notably the Columbine School shooting, the Aurora Theater shooting, and most recently the Arapahoe High School shooting. The media attention surrounding these high-profile incidents presents a challenging environment for the Sheriff’s Department.

The Detention and Administration Bureau within the Sheriff Department, and its 401 sworn and civilian staff members are responsible for the jail facility and its inmates. The Detention Facility is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA) since 1991 and the medical unit is accredited through the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) since 1989.
